DEI – Chile: Astaldi and Cimolai win contract for super-telescope

The ACE consortium, constituted by Astaldi (65%) and Cimolai (35%) in partnership with the EIE Group, won a contract to design and produce the dome and the main structure of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which will be erected on Chile’s Cerro Armazones. It will be the world’s largest structure of this type, with mirrors almost four times the size of those of the largest existing telescopes.

Korea: new health control legislation on imported food

Korea’s ‘Special Act on Imported Food Safety Management’, a law that modifies the regulations on imported food products, was put into effect last Feb. 4. The law however will not be put into force until next Aug. 4, at the close of a six-month grace period. The law differentiates generic food products from animal products. For the first category, the new regulation provides for the obligation of producing companies to register with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) at least seven days before the date of export, specifying some reference data (name, address, list of products, etc.). Some of the innovative provisions of the reform include the faculty for the MFDS to carry out inspections at the producer’s production facilities, after consulting with the company or with the Government of the exporting Country. As for animal products, the regulation introduces a new preventive authorisation procedure for every new product to be exported. The MFDS has prepared a list for each Country containing the products that are already certified and therefore exportable to South Korea without the need for further authorisation. In the case of Italy, products falling under the following categories have already been admitted: pork derivatives, dairy products and egg products.
