International Atomic Energy Agency: Italy elected President of 59th General Conference opening today in Vienna

Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Vienna Filippo Formica was elected today as President of the 59th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

At seven year since its last presidency in 2008, Italy returns to preside over this major annual event for the Agency, called upon now to verify and monitor implementation of the Iranian nuclear programme agreement concluded on 14 July.

The Farnesina hailed this acknowledgement of Italy’s commitment within the sector of nuclear non-proliferation, and the role it has played in the field of nuclear security and applications of nuclear science and technology.

With a view to sharing the best practices developed by our country, Italy will hold a Conference side event on Wednesday of this week dedicated to the experience of the Trieste International School on Nuclear Security, now in its 5th year.
