UN – International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, in collaboration with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, invites citizens to celebrate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2015. The celebration will take place in Brindisi at 18.00 on 29 May, on Lungomare Regina Margherita. It is part of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and the 60th anniversary of Italy’s entry to the organisation, both of which fall in 2015.

Defence Ministry also taking part

The Ministry of Defence will also be taking part this year, with the presence of platoons and bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri. They will pay homage to the peacekeepers who carry out the UN mandate on a daily basis and create the conditions to foster peace, stability and reconstruction in post-conflict areas. Pupils and students from the “Marzolla – Simone – Durano”, “I.C. Casale” and “I.C. Centro” schools will perform together in an orchestra and choir to close the ceremony.

The UN’s UNHRD-WFP, UNICC, UNOPS and UNRIC agencies, Brindisi City Council and Province, the Italian Committee for the Development of the World Food Programme, ASSOARMA, CISOM, the Military Corps and Voluntary Nurses of the Italian Red Cross, Intersos and the Brindisi-Valesio Rotary Club have all embraced and contributed to the initiative with great enthusiasm.
