Italy and Myanmar sign agreement for national electrification

An important Soft Loan Agreement of 30 million euros was recently signed in Nay Pyi Taw between Italy and Myanmar, as part of the national electrification programme supported by the World Bank. Thanks to the Italian contribution, which focuses mainly on Chin State and surrounding areas, that among the country’s poorest and most remote parts, at least 100,000 households, for a total of about half a million people, will have access to electricity.
“In this way, Italy will be able to contribute to improving the levels of education, the quality and continuity of healthcare and hospital care services, the productivity of micro and small-sized local businesses and, in general, the living conditions of peoples in conflict-laden areas”, said Ambassador Alessandra Schiavo who signed the agreement before Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, U Aung Thu, and World Bank Country Director for Myanmar, Ellen Goldstein.

Targeted support will be provided to promote the development of mini-grids and “home solar systems”.
