The Farnesina at the service of Italy’s growth worldwide – that was the topic for discussion at a meeting called by Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini and Secretary General Michele Valensise. Participants included diplomatic advisers from the Presidency of the Republic, the Prime Minister’s Office, various ministries and state-owned companies. Also present were around 30 officers who, along with our diplomatic network abroad, perform the important task of promoting Italy’s political and economic interests throughout the world.
“The growing ‘demand for Italy’ abroad can be clearly seen in today’s international context. And the ‘country system’ must provide a unified response to that demand”, underscored Minister Mogherini. “The international challenges Italy is facing require a common commitment to ensure that the government acts in the consistent manner required. And that consistency can only be provided through liaison and coordination by the Farnesina, including through our network of diplomatic advisers”, she explained.
Two important events were also discussed at the meeting: the Italian Presidency of the European Union and EXPO 2015. “Our diplomatic advisers can provide a decisive input to the preparation of both these events to give them a strong political dimension”, as Valensise underscored. “Especially as regards our Eastern and Mediterranean neighbours and the Balkans, for the EU Presidency, and for institutional visits to Italy by representatives of the 140 countries who, to date, have confirmed that they’ll be taking part in EXPO 2015”.
