Alex Bonucchi case

Following instructions from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, the Director General for Italians Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today received the Algerian Ambassador to Italy in relation to the case of Italian national Alex Bonucchi.

Alex Bonucchi tragically passed away on 4 January 2021 due to electrocution at a hotel in Rouiba, approximately 40 km from Algiers, where he was staying for professional reasons. The legal representative of the hotel was acquitted of the charge of involuntary manslaughter in the first two levels of judicial proceedings. An appeal against the acquittal has been filed with the Court of Cassation at the Supreme Court in Algiers.

During the meeting, the Director General reiterated the great attention with which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Embassy in Algiers are following Alex’s case. He once again called on the Algerian authorities to provide an official response to the repeated requests from the Italian side, in order to definitively clarify the causes of the Italian national’s death. In March, Minister Tajani sent a letter to his Algerian counterpart, expressing the hope that full clarity on the incident could be achieved as soon as possible. The Director General also conveyed the expectation that the Algerian authorities respond to the repeated requests from both the family and the Embassy in Algiers regarding the return of the deceased’s organs.
