Tajani discusses Ukraine and Gaza with French and German Foreign Ministers

Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, held two telephone conversations today in anticipation of tomorrow’s videoconference with G7 Foreign Ministers, marking the 24th of August, the day Ukraine commemorates its declaration of independence from the USSR in 1991.

In his discussions with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and German counterpart Johann Wadephul, the head of Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the Italian Government’s support for the process aimed at initiating political and diplomatic negotiations for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. According to Tajani, “Coordination with Germany and France within the EU is crucial to swiftly move forward in defining security guarantees for Ukraine in order to reach a peace agreement”.

Minister Tajani also reiterated Italy’s position regarding the Middle East, emphasising the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages, and immediate humanitarian aid, both food and medical, to the Palestinian population. Tajani, together with his French and German counterparts, expressed the view that new settlements in the West Bank pose a serious obstacle to peace, which Israel must actively work to build.
