On the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani took part in the meeting of the “Coalition for the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia”, chaired by President Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Carney.
The Coalition, established by Ukraine and Canada in February 2024, has included Italy as a member since its inception. According to figures released by the Ukrainian authorities, to date over 600 children have died, more than 2,000 have been injured, and an equal number remain missing. Nearly 20,000 children are reported to have been abducted by Russia. Approximately 1,600 children have so far been returned or have otherwise made their way back to Ukraine.
In his address, Minister Tajani emphasised the need to place the humanitarian dimension of the conflict—beginning with the plight of children—at the heart of international efforts.
“Deportations, abductions and forced adoptions are unacceptable,” Tajani stated. He also noted that he had discussed the issue with the Holy Father during their audience on 25 August, underlining Italy’s strong support for the Vatican’s role in addressing this sensitive matter.
