In today’s phone call with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, discussed the main topics of the Iran-US negotiations. The memorandum to be signed in the next few hours will kick off a 60-day negotiation for a final agreement.

“This first agreement is a decisive step, which must be followed by a negotiation that has a strategic objective: we must start the construction of a phase of peaceful confrontation throughout the region.” Tajani said. “I confirmed to my colleague that Italy is ready to support the important diplomatic work that has yet to be done in the negotiations with the United States: it is, however, crucial now that the agreement holds up and allows for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, guaranteeing freedom of navigation and free transit of goods, without obstacles or tolls”.

During the call, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which is continuing in Lebanon, was discussed. Minister Tajani has reaffirmed that Italy will act to persuade the parties to abandon new military operations, calling on Iran to act on Hezbollah to block its actions against Israel.
“It is crucial now that the agreement holds up and allows the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, guaranteeing freedom of navigation and free transit of goods, without obstacles or tolls”.
