Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani signed an agreement yesterday at Palazzo Chigi with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel to strengthen bilateral cooperation through regular consultations between the two Foreign Ministries on a broad range of bilateral, European, and international issues. The signing took place on the sidelines of the Prime Minister’s meeting with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.

Italy and Portugal share excellent bilateral relations, evidenced by convergence on key international and European issues – immigration, enlargement, and the Southern Neighbourhood -and most recently sealed by the bilateral meeting held last May between President Sergio Mattarella and the new President António José Seguro.

Italy is one of Portugal’s main trading partners. Thanks to the agreement signed today, Italian and Portuguese diplomats will work more closely to explore the potential for collaboration in the cultural, scientific, and economic sectors, also leveraging the presence of major Italian companies in Portugal. In 2025 trade reached nearly 10 billion euros, with a 5.6% growth compared to the previous year.
