MARINES: positive developments from the Supreme Court on the detention of the 2 servicemen, says Terzi

This morning’s ruling by the Supreme Court in New Delhi “most definitely marks a positive development. It provides an opportunity for a great improvement in the marines’ detention conditions once they leave the prison”. This was Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi’s comment on the decision by the court in New Delhi not to pose any objections to the transfer of the two marines from the prison in Trivandrum to “a place other than prison”.

New Delhi’s ruling “also provides an opportunity to continue along the judicial pathway, which truly opens up further prospects”, added Terzi. He underscored that “the prospect of the two marines returning home is, of course, the one we continue to pursue”.

The timescale “will not be rapid”, explained the Foreign Minister. Terzi underscored that “the huge effort being made by the negotiating team in New Delhi has once again been demonstrated. As has the fact that the legal arguments we have been putting forward are beginning to receive a more receptive audience”.
