Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani held a telephone conversation today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, focusing on key developments in the Middle East and regional security, with particular attention to Lebanon, Gaza, the Red Sea and the Gulf.
On the occasion of the new round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel taking place today in Rome, Minister Fidan expressed his support for the Italian government’s actions; Minister Tajani expressed the hope that the dialogue would yield concrete results to consolidate the ceasefire and facilitate a diplomatic and political agreement, in the interests of regional peace and stability. He reiterated that the disarmament of Hezbollah, alongside the withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon, is an essential element for a lasting solution, and that an international presence on the ground will continue to be vital in the future.
With regard to the agreement on the disarmament of Hamas, Minister Tajani expressed his appreciation for the role played by Turkey in brokering the deal. He emphasised that it is now essential for both sides to formally approve the agreed roadmap, so that its full implementation can begin, including the planned deployment of an international stabilisation force following the Israeli withdrawal. Tajani highlighted the role that Ankara can continue to play in encouraging Hamas to honour the commitments set out in the agreement, reiterating Italy’s willingness to support the process. The full implementation of the agreement is essential to consolidate the stabilisation of Gaza and keep alive the prospect of a Two-State Solution, in line with the conclusions of the Global Alliance meeting held in Rome on 29 July.
The two ministers also discussed the main regional security issues. Tajani and Fidan reiterated that the immediate and full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea is a strategic priority. Tajani expressed concern at the Houthi threats and reaffirmed Italy’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia. He highlighted the leading role played by Italy in Operation ASPIDES to protect commercial shipping.
Finally, the Italian Minister emphasised the importance of cooperation with Turkey in the defence sector, reiterating Italy’s commitment to supporting its NATO and G7 partners, including in the procurement of defence equipment designed to strengthen security in Italy and across Europe.
