Following the escalation of the violence in Syria, which has spread across the country by now, the humanitarian emergency is being aggravated not only by bad weather conditions and a worsening economic situation, but also by the difficulties relief organizations are with access. The populations most affected are in the areas of Abel, Hama, Dara’a and the rural outskirts of Damascus, in addition to the displaced peoples of Baba Amr and Homs.
The Syrian Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross have assisted thousands of people in the last few days, evacuating the wounded and protecting medical personnel. Additionally the International Committee of the Red Cross, present in the country since March 2011, along with the Syrian Red Crescent, have reached over 100,000 people with emergency supplies.
The Italian Red Cross has launched a fundraising campaign, the proceeds of which will go to relief programmes carried out in partnership with the Syrian Red Crescent and the Red Cross Societies, and are aimed at providing emergency goods such as tents, blankets, kitchen kits, hygiene kits, electrical generators for medical facilities and ambulances.
The DGCS supports the efforts undertaken by the International Committee of the Red Cross and Syrian Red Crescent Societies to alleviate the suffering, and praises the efforts of the Red Cross.
