Following to the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that severely struck the Balkh province on November 3rd 2025, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and to the local socioeconomic fabric, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), in synergy with UNESCO, has launched an emergency intervention for the securing and restoring the Shrine of Hazrat Ali, better known as the “Blue Mosque,” in Mazar-i-Sharif.
The earthquake caused widespread structural damage, affecting the foundations, roofs, minarets, and the precious majolica decorative elements of the monumental complex, one of the most significant and symbolic places of worship for the Afghan people.
To respond to this emergency, Italy has decided to extend to the city of Mazar-i-Sharif the intervention model already successfully tested in the Bamiyan Valley, integrating the protection of cultural heritage with vocational training and the creation of job opportunities, primarily for women.
Through this initiative, Italy and UNESCO reaffirm their commitment to supporting the Afghan people, promoting a development model that views culture as a strategic resource for community resilience, social cohesion, and the protection of a universal heritage that is a symbol of Afghanistan’s historical and religious identity.
