University corridors for refugee students

The “University Corridors” project addressed to refugee students in Ethiopia, which offers courses and integration in Italy for young people holding a refugee status in the African country, has been strengthened. The second edition of the Memorandum of Understanding “UNICORE” (University Corridors for Refugees) promoted by UNHCR, with the participation of the Directorate General for Migration Policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Caritas Italiana and Diaconia valdese, has been extended to the partnership from two to eleven Italian universities with the aim of ensuring twenty refugee students access to the two-year master’s degree and support for university life.

The role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be to manage the preliminary process at the Embassy in Addis Ababa for the visa applications for study/university registration of the selected students.

“UNICORE” innovatively connects the supply of study opportunities to talented young people who consider our country a cultural reference point to the wider Italian cooperation between institutions and civil society in developing legal immigration channels for refugees and vulnerable migrants. The new 2020-2022 agreement is the first important signal in relaunching these reception and integration activities after the suspension due to the health emergency.
