The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, represented Italy at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta. Divided into three sessions, the Ministerial meeting addressed the main international geopolitical tensions, with particular focus on freedom of navigation, food security, the resilience of global trade, energy security and the protection of supply chains.
“Freedom of navigation and the security of strategic maritime routes are fundamental to global economic stability, food security and energy security. Italy is at the forefront of ensuring their protection, also through its participation in the European missions EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and ATALANTA,” she said. The Undersecretary also highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the resilience of international trade and supply chains by diversifying routes and protecting strategic infrastructure. With specific reference to food security, she recalled the launch, together with Croatia, of the “Rome Coalition on Access to Fertilisers and Food Security”, to counter the consequences of international crises on the flows of cereals and fertilisers.
As to energy security, Undersecretary Tripodi highlighted Italy’s strategic role as a Mediterranean hub linking Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and the Government’s commitment to stabilising markets and curbing price volatility. In that context, she recalled Italy’s contribution to the coordinated release of strategic oil reserves within the framework of the International Energy Agency. She finally emphasised the importance of ensuring secure and affordable energy through the diversification of sources and a technology-neutral approach, promoting renewable energy, hydrogen and innovative nuclear technologies, with particular attention to the needs of developing countries and the most vulnerable economies.
