Italy’s re-election to the IMO Executive Council

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the re-election of Italy in Category A of the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the period 2020-2021. The re-election took place today in London during the activities of the 31st General Assembly of the Organization, which has the task of promoting the development and safety of maritime transport.

The re-election of Italy, an uninterrupted member of the Executive Council since the establishment of the IMO in 1948, confirms the prestige our Country enjoys in the maritime sector and testifies to the special contribution that Italy provides to the development and safety of navigation. In addition, our Country attaches special attention to the protection of the marine environment and to the creation of a sustainable maritime transport system with low carbon emissions.

As proof of Italy’s commitment in this area, in partnership with the United Kingdom, Italy will co-host the COP26 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2020.

Category A of the Executive Council includes the States that, given the considerable size of their merchant fleets, provide great impetus to the development of world maritime transport.

Italy was re-elected to the Council, with very broad consensus, along with Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, Greece, Panama, the United Kingdom, Norway, the United States and the Russian Federation
