“The world has changed but Romero’s message is still relevant”

Under-Secretary Mario Giro attends beatification ceremony for Monsignor Romero

The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mario Giro, attended the beatification ceremony for Monsignor Romero, which took place in San Salvador on 23 May 2015. “He is a figure who still poses questions for us today. The world has changed but Romero’s message is still relevant in a world that is continues to be polarised along the fracture lines of the 1980s”, declared Under-Secretary Giro.

Giro also commented on the long-standing good relations between Italy and El Salvador. “Our relationship must be based on the needs of the present but also on a shared vision for the future, whether in tackling the growth of trans-national crime, increasing bilateral economic and financial trade or recognising the potential of migrants in our country. Social and economic problems require cooperation by all of us. The words of Monsignor Romero can be a starting point to build a common vision of the future that restores man to a central position”, concluded Under-Secretary Giro.
