International Roma Day

On International Roma Day, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reiterates the government’s commitment to foster the inclusion of Roma, Sinte and Caminanti communities. This includes the application of international conventions such as the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, the latter ratified by Italy in December 2014.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation notes that during the Universal Periodic Review of the domestic situation of human rights that all United Nations member states must undergo, Italy undertook on 18 March 2015 to implement a number of recommendations relating to Roma, Sinte and Caminanti.

These recommendations envisage: a streamlining of administrative procedures to reduce the number of cases of statelessness; the adoption of additional measures to combat all forms of discrimination against Roma communities and to ensure equal opportunities in the exercise of economic-social and cultural rights; and stronger efforts at the local level to apply the National Strategy for the Inclusion of Roma, Sinte and Caminanti.
