Minister for Foreign Affairs Emma Bonino sent Ambassador Roberto De Azevedo a message of congratulations today for his appointment as Director General of the World Trade Organisation.
Minister Bonino said she was “pleased that a person from Latin America was chosen for this fundamental post”, whom the foreign minister descrided as having “a deep understanding of multilateral trade issues and lengthy experience in the sector”.
Underscoring the urgency “to strengthen the World Trade Organisation’s aims in order to encourage the building of a world that offers increased opportunities to everyone as a result of economic growth, and to ensure a fairer interdependence among people”. In her message to Roberto De Azevedo, Minister Bonino said she was convinced that it would now be possible “to pursue effective collaboration between Italy and the WTO on the main themes of multilateral trade, not least in light of the upcoming ministerial meeting in Bali”.
