A shipment of essential supplies and medical kits sent by Italian Development Cooperation arrived this morning in Kilis, on the Turkish-Syrian border. The supplies are intended to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of the Syrian population in regions under opposition control.
The approximately 30 tons of supplies will now be distributed, in close coordination with the Syrian National Coalition, to beneficiaries on the Syrian side of the border. The priority will be to reach the most vulnerable groups, especially women and children.
The aim of the operation, worth around 192,000 euros, is to provide concrete help for the victims of the dramatic humanitarian crisis caused by continuing conflict. According to the latest United Nations estimates, the number of displaced persons has now reached over 4 million – of which over 1.3 million have taken refuge in neighbouring countries. And over 7 million people have been affected by the fighting.
Italian Development Cooperation has conducted numerous operations, worth around 6.7 million euros, to relieve the suffering of the Syrian population. Further humanitarian, reconstruction and developmentinitiatives are planned for the coming weeks, for a total of about 20 million euros.
