“A very positive step in the political and institution-building process of the Syrian Opposition Coalition”. This was how Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi described the election of Ghassan Hitto as head of the Coalition’s provisional government.
“The international community”, explained Terzi, “welcomed the message that emerged from the Rome Meeting. We are confident that the new head of the provisional government, under the leadership of Coalition President Moaz al Khatib, will help attain the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people”. Minister Terzi spoke with al Khatib on the phone today, to express Italy’s satisfaction with this development.
The Farnesina has a well-established and fruitful relationship with Ghassan Hitto, until now humanitarian aid coordinator of the Syrian National Coalition. That relationship can now be strengthened to increase Italian assistance for the Syrian population.
The election will strengthen the Coalition’s cohesion and operational capacity and will facilitate the flow of aid, humanitarian first and foremost, within the country. Italy continues to be strongly engaged in this effort, the aim being to relieve the suffering of the victims of the conflict and restart the delivery of basic public services.
