Middle East: Mogherini cites intollerable casualty toll, urges stop to shelling

Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini urged the parties to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to halt the shelling. “With each passing hour the number of dead and wounded rises as the shelling destroys homes and public buildings. We have also learned that the Um el Nasser Child Center, which the Italian Cooperation contributed to opening, has been razed to the ground”, she said.

“A positive note is that the Egyptian authorities have decided to open the Rafah Crossing to allow transit for the wounded. The parties to the conflict cannot continue to ignore the international community’s appeals for an immediate humanitarian truce and a ceasefire agreement. As duty President of the Council of the European Union we intend to see to it that this call is firmly repeated at the meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels on Tuesday”, she concluded.
