Syria: Terzi hails un resolution. A strong mandate for Annan successor

“The UN resolution on Syria, cosponsored by dozens of nations that include Italy and approved today by the UN General Assembly, is a major political development that I welcome with great satisfaction”.

This was the comment by Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi, according to whom “the UN has shown its ability to resume diplomacy at a complex and crucial stage of the Syrian crisis. It is meaningful”, the minister continued, “that, thanks not least to Europe’s convinced backing, to which Italy has actively contributed, there has been broad convergence on the part of the international community: over two-thirds of the UN members have agreed on a text firmly condemning the horrible violence being perpetrated in Syria and, with the Assad regime considered the main offender in the situation, pointing to democratic transition as the goal to pursue. A goal”, Terzi underscored, “made paramount by the gravity of the crisis and its dramatic humanitarian consequences”.

“It is my hope that the resolution adopted today in New York”, Terzi concluded, “will lay the groundwork for the strong mandate of a soon to be named successor to Kofi Annan”.
