On the instructions of Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani, Secretary General Amb. Riccardo Guariglia today summoned the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Rome, Mohammad Reza Sabouri, to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Farnesina) to discuss the case of Cecilia Sala, detained in Evin Prison since 19 December.
Italy first of all called for the immediate release of its Italian national, who had arrived in Iran with a regular journalistic visa.
Ambassador Guariglia also reiterated Italy’s request to guarantee dignified detention conditions, respectful of human rights, and full consular assistance to Sala, allowing the Embassy of Italy in Tehran to visit her and provide her with the comfort items that she has so far been denied.
