Born in Perugia on 3 May 1958, Lorenzo Angeloni graduated in Law in 1981 and joined the diplomatic service in 1985. After an initial experience at the Protocol Department (1985-1987), he was posted abroad first to Montevideo (1987-1990), then, from 1990 to 1994, to Frankfurt (Germany), where he served as Adjunct Consul. In 1994, he returned to the Ministry, to the Directorate General for Development Cooperation. In 1995, he joined the staff of the Undersecretary of State, and, after his appointment as Counsellor of Legation on 1 May 1995, he served as the Head of the Secretariat of the Undersecretary of State from 1996 to 2001. From 2001 to 2003, he worked as Deputy Chief of Mission in Algiers. On 2 July 2000, he was appointed Embassy Counsellor. Ambassador to Khartoum during the crisis in Darfour (2003-2007), in 2007 he became a Minister Plenipotentiary. After returning to work at the Ministry, since 15 September 2008 he serves as Deputy General Director for Asia, Oceania, the Pacific and Antarctic region. Mission Chief in Hanoi (2010-2015) and then New Delhi (2015-2019), in 2013 he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and, in 2016, appointed Ambasciatore di grado, the highest ambassadorial rank in Italy. On 4 December 2019, he became General Director for Promoting the Italian System, internationally. Besides his diplomatic work, Ambassador Angeloni also doubles as an author and essayist, having authored essays and reports on international politics, as well as four novels.
