Italy – Argentina: Access to acts regarding victims of the military dictatorship (1976-1983)

Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003 provided for the Italian diplomatic-consular archives in Argentina containing data regarding the victims of the military dictatorship (1976-83) to be transferred to Argentina’s National Archive of Memory.

In this manner, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contributed to rebuilding an historic period in order to bring the truth to light, ensure that crimes against humanity come to justice, keep the memory of the victims alive and facilitate the process of reconciliation.
During a mission to Argentina on 2-3 October 2012, Under-Secretary Marta Dassù delivered the first files on the victims to the National Archive of Memory, which intends to utilise the documentation for institutional purposes in accordance with the laws in effect.
