Italy-Afghanistan – work on Herat bypass starting soon

Afghan infrastructure will benefit from a new Italian input thanks to the efforts of the Farnesina. A contract was signed today by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works and the company that won the tender to build the first lot (20.4 kilometres) of the Herat bypass. funded by Italy, the project is of strategic importance to western Afghanistan. The funding earmarked by the Italian Foreign Ministry amounts to 28.6 million euro. Work on the new bypass will being in September 2015.

“The project envisages the construction of a 45 kilometre bypass linking the city of Heart directly with the national highway for Kandahar and Kabul”, explained the Italian Ambassador in Afghanistan, Luciano Pezzotti. “It will mark a significant improvement in regional links with Iran and Turkmenistan”.

Italy is one of the leading supporters of infrastructure development projects in Afghanistan, with 275 million euro of funding approved, of which 135 million already delivered. Read more, in Italian.
