The “Matera, land of Sassi” photography exhibition was inaugurated on Friday, Jan. 22 at the Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) in Athens and will run until Feb. 20. The show, which was organised by the IIC, displays the shots taken by Greek photographer Jenny Lykourezou, who was fascinated by the magnificent setting of the “Sassi” of Matera, European culture capital for 2019. “Jenny Lykourezou’s look adds on to that of the many photographers who have toured our city and fully grasped the spirit, the magic, the atmospheres that have been swathing these places for over 10,000 years, renewing themselves with every new look,” explained Salvatore Adduce, the Mayor of Matera. The Greek photographer wrote on her website: “I started my photography course at the end of the ‘90s and, in my frequent travels, I focus my attention on man and everyday life, portraits and street photography; taking shots of buildings and museums are the sectors of my activity.” The artist has taken numerous “photographic pilgrimages”. She added: “There are many destinations that have fascinated or surprised me. In Italy, Calabria, Matera, Umbria.”
