Italian ambassador to Mexico City, Alessandro Busacca, accompanied by Counsellor Simone Landini and by the Embassy’s security expert, Major Guido Iannelli, met Jose’ Alberto Rodriguez Calderon, Mexico’s Deputy Attorney General for Legal and International Affairs of the Attorney General’s Office. The meeting focused on joint activities in fighting transnational crime and on several bilateral judicial cooperation issues. Above all, the meeting was a follow-on from the visit to Mexico from Nov. 3 to 5, 2015 of Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando and Italy’s top anti-mafia prosecutor Franco Roberti, at the invitation of the Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez.
Fighting organised crime and money laundering
As well as participating in a workshop on sharing experiences in the fight against organised crime and money laundering, the minister met Ms Gomez and held institutional meetings with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Jose de Jesus Zambrano Grijalva, and with the President of the National Human Rights Commission, Luis Raul Gonzalez Perez. During these meetings, the Minister of Justice and the anti-mafia prosecutor gave an account of the Italian experience in fighting transnational crime, especially drug trafficking, both from a regulatory and operational perspective, exploring issues related to the judicial control of informants, the confiscation of assets of organised crime, tough prison conditions for members of the mafia, and the fight against money laundering, kidnapping and people trafficking.
