On 23 July, Salvatore Schirmo, the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) in La Valletta, conferred the “Culture and Fashion Award 2016” to Italian fashion designers Gianni Molaro and Carlo Alberto Terranova and to Maltese designer Luke Azzopardi.
The award ceremony was the highlight of the ”Gran Gala of Fashion”, an event held in La Valletta and directed by Giuseppe Racioppi in which the three fashion designers presented their high fashion creations to the Maltese public.
The event is part of the integrated promotion of Brand Italy in the Mediterranean Countries carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. It was co-organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in La Valletta and the Maltese Chamber of Fashion, and sponsored by the Italian Embassy and the Municipal Council of La Valletta. The Gala was organized in partnership with the Maltese-Italian Chamber of Commerce and with the support of several sponsors.
At the end of the fashion show, the Rome-based National Historic Dance Company directed by Nino Graziano Luca, staged a scene from the Grand Ball in Luchino Visconti’s film “The Leopard” (“Il Gattopardo”). The Grand Gala closed in the gardens of the Grandmaster’s Palace of the Republic of Malta with a reception catered for by Michelin star-winning Master Chef Giuseppe Esposito, and by chefs of the Association of Professional Italian Chefs, in which the guests were offered Italian gourmet wines and food.
