Australia: Government annunces the “Brisbane Metro” project

The Government has announced the “Brisbane Metro” project to build two new lines in Brisbane. Although the project envisages the expansion and upgrade of the “Busways”, the city’s fast track bus network, it is no less significant than if it concerned real metro lines. The first phase of the project envisages expanding the present network of “Busways” by building significant infrastructure (including a tunnel). The second phase will focus on the upgrade of 17 passenger stations, the purchase of new large-capacity passenger vehicles and a new high-tech vehicle traffic control and management system. The project, estimated to be worth 944 million Australian dollars, approximately 600 million euros, is on stand-by for a financing from the Federal Government, which is yet to be confirmed. Once it is definitively confirmed, the project is expected to kick off in 2019 and be finished by 2022.
