Arab Emirates: Maire Tecnimont awarded major petrochemical contract

The Maire Tecnimont group has been awarded a major order for engineering, procurement and construction work and services by the Abu Dhabi Polymer Company (Borouge). The 730 million dollar order is for a new polypropylene production unit (PP5) in Ruwais, 240 km west of the capital, where the main oil and gas plants are based. The unit will be integrated into the existing polymer development centre at Borouge.

The start up and two expansion stages of the complex were  carried out by Maire Tecnimont, and the final stage (Borouge 3) was completed by the group in 2016 in a joint venture with the Korean company, Samsung Korea Engineering. PP5 is a standalone project to integrate and expand the facilities. Completion is expected by the end of 2021, and the new unit will be annexed to the Borouge 3 complex. It will have a maximum production capacity of 480,000 tons a year. Adnoc CEO, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, said that he intended to transform Ruwais into the biggest integrated petrochemical refinery in the world in the “Vision 2030” strategic manifesto.
