The Italian Embassy to Iran coordinated the programme of initiatives celebrating the 2019 Italian Design Day – IDD-  at its third edition on 2 and 3 March. Architect  Giovanni Ottonello, Art Director of the European Design Institute, was the “Ambassador” of Italian Design in Iran for the second year in a row. The overarching theme of each and all of the events was “Design and the City of the Future”, which is also the IDD theme for 2019.

An event entitled “The Sprout Workshop” was addressed to students, young entrepreneurs and professionials of the industry. The workshop was held on 2 March and was organized in cooperation with “Ravagh”, an Iranian group that imports and distributes some of the most prominent Italian brands of furniture in Iran. The event’s two speakers, Italian architects and owners of “The Sprout Studio” company, Maurizio Serena and Laureano Mon, asked participants to discuss an innovative method based on an investigative analysis of the social, economic and technological evolution in the development of strategies to penetrate the market in various fields. The day comprised two working sessions.

Ambassador Conciatori delivered the opening remarks at a round table dedicated to “Desing and the City of the Future” in the morning of 3 March. The event was organized in cooperation with Dyban International, an Iranian architecture and consultancy firm. The event’s agenda featured two Italian speakers, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Domus, Walter Mariotti, and the co-founder of Milan-based Piuarch architecture firm, architect Francesco Fresa, along with architect Ottonello. Some of the city’s most renowned firms attended the workshop, along with institutional representatives of the Ministry of Transportation and Urban Planning and of the Municipality of Tehran. The presentations and the ensuing discussion were an opportunity for the participants to focus on common themes and issues as well as share experiences and plan synergies on topical issues like environmental sustainability, the human dimension and the role of young generation. Some networking was also carried out in view of future common projects.

Architect Ottonello delivered a lecture at the Architecture Department of the University of Tehran in the afternoon of 3 March on “Design and the City of the Future”, which was followed by Mariotti’s presentation of Domus, the magazine. The event was attended by over 400 students and was also well covered by social media.

The Programme of the 2019 Italian Design Day was developed in conjunction with the Tehran Office of the Italian Trade Agency, ICE, and with the sponsorship of Turkish Airlines and the Espinas Palace.
