Press release detail

Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi expressed his “deep satisfaction” with yesterday’s Lower House approval of the law ratifying the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.

After the recent ratification of the European Council convention for the Protection of children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, this ratification constitutes the further absorption into Italian law of the obligations assumed with the signing of international agreements on human rights.

Ratification of the optional protocol against torture also permits Italy to fulfil its 2007 pledge as a candidate for the Human Rights Council.

Minister Terzi acknowledged the efforts of Sen. Pietro Marcenaro, President of the Senate Permanent Committee on Human Rights that led to this additional and outstanding achievement.
