“Solidarietà: dovere religioso o dovere civico?” giovedì 5 all’Ambasciata d’Italia presso la Santa Sede

On 5 December 2013 the Embassy of Italy to the Holy See will host the next session of the “Courtyard of the Gentiles”, an initiative founded in 2011 in the Pontifical Council for Culture. The aim is to promote dialogue between believers and non-believers.

The topic of Thursday’s meeting will be “Solidarity: religious duty or civic duty?”. Speakers include Pietro Grasso, Speaker of the Senate; Corrado Passera, former Minister for Economic Development; Giovanni Ialongo, President of Posteitaliane; Paolo Andrea Colombo, President of ENEL; and Marco Morganti, CEO of Banca Prossima.

This will be the Courtyard’s second visit to Palazzo Borromeo, after the 2012 session, whose topic was “Diplomacy and Truth”.

This year’s session, explained Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture “will look beyond the concept of solidarity to focus on the concepts of ‘free’ and ‘donation’. Concepts that will be considered not just from a religious perspective, but as necessary elements of an authentic development of the economy. So, a sort of provocation, a thorn in the side of an exclusively financial and market-led view of the economy that sees vested interests and gain as the only goal”.

The event was made possible by generous contributions from a number of major Italian companies and banks, most notably Posteitaliane, Banca Prossima and Enel.

Journalists, photographers and TV crews interested in following the event should apply for specific accreditation no later than 10.00 of Thursday 5 December. Their application should include their name, date of birth, press card number, name of their media organisation, and their qualification/role.

Accredited media representatives should report to the Embassy (Palazzo Borromeo, Viale delle Belle Arti 4) no later than 18/00 on Thursday 5 December 2013.
