Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini hailed today’s news of the General Affairs Council’s granting of EU Candidate Country status to Albania.
This decision, which will have to be ratified by the next European Council, “is the crowning result of the commitment and determination Albania has shown and the results it has achieved”, the minister underscored, and “is an historic step in the European integration prospects not only of that country but of the entire Western Balkans region”. Italy has always supported Tirana’s bid for European membership with conviction, and will continue to encourage the reforms necessary for full European integration”.
