Ukraine: Mogherini deeply saddened by air tragedy. Investigation needed to establish responsibility

Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini is following the work of the Farnesina’s Crisis Unit in person as they check the passenger list provided by Malaysian Airlines for the aircraft allegedly shot down today on the Ukraine-Russia border. The operations room is also at work, but no reports of Italian passengers have as yet come in.

“I was deeply saddened to hear of the tragic incident involving the Malaysian Airlines passenger flight in which 295 people lost their lives”, stated the Minister.

“We now need to discover as soon as possible exactly what happened through an independent commission of enquiry, as the Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko, has proposed. We need to establish the truth”, she added. “Italy, along with our European partners, will be following developments in the investigation closely so that any responsibility is clarified”.
