The elections in Ukraine and the implementation of the Minsk agreements were the focus of a phone call today, 29 October 2014, between Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini and the Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko. Mogherini congratulated Poroshenko on the outcome of the vote on Sunday 27 October. The two discussed the reforms that will be taken forward in Ukraine in the coming months, reforms which the international community has undertaken to support.
The foreign minister told President Poroshenko of her concerns over the consequences of possible local elections in south-east Ukraine next week, concerns that that she also expressed yesterday in a phone conversation with the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov. “It’s important not to stray from the Minsk agreements, which must be implemented in full, and to ensure that no new obstacles are placed on the pathway of political dialogue by all parties”, said Minister Mogherini.
