Mission to Tunisia of Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola

The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola, concluded his mission to Tunisia today, in the course of which he held meetings with the Ministers of the Interior, Development and Cooperation and Agriculture. The visit, which took place only a few days before the anniversary of the attack on the Bardo Museum, to whose victims he paid tribute, was aimed at confirming Italy’s staunch support for all the sectors of bilateral cooperation with Tunisia.

Security and counter-terrorism, the stabilization of Libya, development cooperation programmes and the strengthening of economic relations between the two Countries were the main issues on the agenda of Undersecretary of State Amendola. Mr Amendola confirmed to his interlocutors that Italy stands by Tunisia, especially now that the Country is experiencing a critical stage – with the very recent jihadist attack in Ben Guardane – and is showing great determination in combating terrorism. In particular, Undersecretary Amendola and Tunisia’s Minister of the Interior expressed their satisfaction for the excellent results achieved in their bilateral cooperation on controlling migration flows, stressing the need and the two Countries’ common determination to continue cooperating on this delicate issue also in the future.

Italy and Tunisia will continue to work together to strengthen their cooperation by extending it to new economic and commercial projects and initiatives. Said projects also include the Italian-Tunisian Economic Forum scheduled to be held in Tunisia in May, the ELMED electric interconnection project and new development cooperation interventions.
