ECMWF data centre in Bologna. Alfano: “The Headquarters Agreement has been promptly put into effect as a sign of Italy’s tangible commitment”

“Last Thursday we celebrated the designation of Bologna as the headquarters for the new data centre of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Only one week later, I am particularly happy to inform you of the ratification and coming into force of the agreement for the data centre headquarters,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, at the end of the cabinet meeting that, at the proposal of the Foreign Ministry, formally put into effect the agreement signed in Reading on 22 June 2017.

“The agreement provides for the creation of the world’s largest data centre in Bologna’s Tecnopolo technology district: this Italian victory is due to the excellent quality of the technology offered and the coordinated support of the Government, the Region, the Municipality and the national research sector,” continued Minister Alfano, underscoring how “the agreement will have a positive fallout on Italy’s whole scientific and academic sector, which will be able to rely on research synergies and projects on the basis of which to develop a district of excellence in a spearheading sector such as meteorology and climate change.” The agreement provides for a comprehensive investment of 100 million euros in Bologna.
