The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano: “Italy firmly condemns further attacks against the territory of Saudi Arabia, for which the Yemeni Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility. Among the attacks were a new round of ballistic missile launches towards the capital, Riyadh.
Such attacks, which can cause further victims among defenseless civilians, already occurred on 26 March and can fuel a military escalation, moving away from the resumption of dialogue and the prospect of eventually negotiating a solution to the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
This spiral of violence must come to an end, enabling the resumption of negotiations under UN auspices, with a view to reaching a solution agreed by all sides involved in order to end the conflict and alleviate the suffering of the civilian population. Italy has supported the commitment of the United Nations for peace in Yemen from the beginning, and we will continue to strongly support the work of the new UN Special Envoy, Martin Griffiths”.
