National Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Immigration

In celebrating the “National Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Immigration”, which commemorates the 368 migrants who drowned in the shipwreck off the coasts of Lampedusa on 3 October 2013, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation recalls that only a joint action by the  international community can make it possible to prevent and limit migration flows in the Countries of Origin, assure the effective protection of human lives, at sea and in deserts, and resolutely combat human trafficking. The Foreign Ministry thus intends to renew the remembrance of all the victims of illegal immigration and urge the European Union and all the Member States to commit to sustainable solutions truly based on the principles of solidarity, burden sharing and loyal cooperation required to prevent tragic events and to tackle the migration phenomenon in a spirit of genuine solidarity.
