The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, and the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Immigration and Asylum of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, met today in Rome. They had a comprehensive meeting during which an innovative Memorandum of Understanding on foreign policy dialogue was signed, establishing a mutual consultation mechanism between Italy and Luxembourg. It is a stable platform, which enables a closer coordination between the two countries on bilateral issues of major importance for the European Union and other multilateral organisations. In particular, the MOU includes the scheduling of annual meetings of the Foreign Affairs Ministers which will take place, alternately, in Italy and Luxembourg . The ministries will hold, in turn, consultations every four months and will maintain constant and regular contacts.
This year, following the initiative of Minister Moavero, Italy has signed similar MOUs with Belgium and The Netherlands -as a result four out of the six founding countries of the European integration process and of NATO, can work back to back and better coordinate the stances to take in the different operational settings. Today’s meeting was also an opportunity for a broad exchange of views especially on the major issues at stake within the EU, namely the initiation of the new institutional cycle, European policies on migration flows, negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework, and the Brexit.
