Migrants: press note by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio

“The judgment expressed by the Hungarian government is wholly instrumental. For years, Italy has been living in an emergency situation mainly caused by the indifference of several European partners like Hungary. It’s easy to play sovereigntist with other people’s borders. Whatever Country does not accept its share of migrants must be severely sanctioned. Italy cannot and will no longer shoulder a problem that concerns the whole EU by itself. European offices must be established in the transit countries where migrants can file their applications for asylum and subsequently be transferred to Europe – and not only to Italy – through humanitarian corridors. This is the only way of putting an end to the hell created by human traffickers and dinghy boats and everybody must shoulder their share of responsibility,” said Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in a note.
