Italy expresses deep concern about the Israeli Government’s announcement to proceed with the construction of 5,000 housing units in the Givat Hamatos district and the Har Homa settlement in East Jerusalem.
In line with the established EU position, Italy reiterates that settlements in the occupied territories are illegal under international law and represent a serious obstacle to the prospect of a sustainable and mutually acceptable solution. We, therefore, urge the Israeli authorities to reconsider the announced decision.
Italy remains convinced that only a two-state solution, with Jerusalem as the capital of both, will be able to ensure a just and lasting peace, based on internationally recognised parameters and relevant UN resolutions.
