Conversation between Undersecretary Scalfarotto and OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria

Undersecretary Ivan Scalfarotto had a videoconference today with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria – assisted by the Organisation’s Directors responsible for trade and agriculture, entrepreneurship, SMEs, regions and cities, tax policies and G20 issues.

It was an extremely constructive debate from which it emerged a deep understanding between Gurria and Scalfarotto on the main economic issues, which is an essential premise for a fruitful cooperation between Italy and the OECD during the next G20 Presidency.

The Undersecretary recalled how Italy, a manufacturing country and seventh largest exporter in the world, has at heart the importance of updating the rules of international trade and the structure of the WTO to the reality of the 21st century, first and foremost with regard to electronic commerce.

He also stressed the intense preparatory activity the Government does in the perspective of the next G20 Presidency that is focused on three “Ps”: People, Planet, Prosperity, i.e. on the issues related to work, gender equality, culture and education; on environmental and climate-energy issues; on digitisation and artificial intelligence.

“I am very satisfied with the cooperation between Italy and OECD in this phase of post-emergency Covid and I would like to underline how the cooperation between Governments in the multilateral field will be essential to overcome the difficult economic situation and the challenges that are expected in the coming months,” Mr Scalfarotto stated.
