Italy welcomes the start of the intra-Afghan negotiations, officially launched today in Doha, as a crucial development in the process of national reconciliation in Afghanistan.
After decades of conflicts, which have caused so much suffering to the Afghan population, the parties have now a valuable opportunity for an agreement that will put an end to violence, serve as a basis for the peaceful coexistence of Afghans, restore peace and stability in the country and the region, and put an end to the threats to international security originating from the Afghan territory.
Italy hopes that the parties will seize this opportunity and invites them to show a constructive attitude, open to compromise, which is fundamental for the success of the negotiations, starting with the urgent issue of the cessation of violence, with its tragic consequences on civilians.
In recent years, Italy has been committed, together with NATO allies and partners, to create the conditions for an Afghanistan in which the rights of all its citizens, including women, children and minorities, are respected.
Italy is firmly committed to stand by the Afghan population and will not fail to support their peace efforts.
