As part of his contacts with the parties, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, today had a telephone conversation with the Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, focusing on the ongoing clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Minister Di Maio expressed deep concern about the intensity of the clashes, which have already caused numerous victims, including civilians. He stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire to preserve the population from further suffering and to prevent further escalation and destabilization of the entire region. Di Maio stressed Italy’s commitment to relaunch negotiations within the OSCE through the mediation of the Minsk Group.
Minister Di Maio noted how the current military crisis proves the unsustainability of the status quo and the need for the parties to return to negotiations, under the aegis of the co-chairs, without preconditions and with serious commitment. Only a negotiated solution can guarantee stability and peace to both countries.
