Meeting of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, and the Minister of the Interior of the Libyan Government of National Accord, Fathi Bashagha

Today, at the Foreign Ministry, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, met with the Minister of the Interior of the Libyan Government of National Accord, Fathi Bashagha.

The talks focused on the latest developments on the situation in Libya, starting with the resumption of the Geneva talks within the 5+5 Joint Military Commission and the forthcoming organisation of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

Minister Di Maio confirmed Italy’s strong and full support for the intra-Libyan dialogue process in accordance with the initiatives promoted by the UNSMIL. At the same time, the Minister called for the rapid conclusion of a lasting and sustainable ceasefire, the full resumption of oil production throughout Libya, and the achievement of an overall political agreement, without external interference and in the interest of the Libyan people.

The two Ministers also examined the key issues of bilateral interest, with a special focus on cooperation in the field of migration, with a view to limiting departures and managing irregular migrants on Libyan territory with due regard for their rights and dignity. These elements should guide the negotiations for the revision of the 2017 Bilateral Memorandum of Understanding, which Italy hopes can be finalized as soon as possible. Finally, the Ministers devoted particular attention to the relaunching of economic cooperation, also in view of the organisation of the upcoming first meeting of the Italian-Libyan Joint Economic Commission (CECIL).
